Bulgaria is situated in southeastern Europe, in the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula. It borders Romania - 609 km (of which 470 km are along the Danube), Serbia - 341, Macedonia - 165, Greece - 493 and Turkey - 259. The coastline on the Black Sea is 378 km long.
The land area is 110.99 thousand sq. km. About 30% of the country are plains, and plateaus and hills make up about 41%. The southwestern part of the country is marked by the high mountains Rila and Pirin, and further east are the lower but more extensive Rhodopes. With a height of 2925 m, Musala in Rila Mountain is the highest peak on the Balkan Peninsula.
The river network is formed by about 540 rivers, most of them - with the exception of the Danube, are relatively short and have low water levels. Most rivers flow through mountainous areas. The longest river Iskar located exclusively on Bulgarian territory has a length of 368 km. There is more than 400 lakes with a total area of about 95 sq. km.
